Storyboard Text

  • Mom have you heard about anyone displaying disorders? I learned about it in class today
  • Unit 9 views on disorders that criminals are likely to display
  • Well yes. I have read about a study conducted by Edward and Bond (2012) that included 62 male offenders. It revealed that these particular criminals displayed certain disorders (Seemungal, 2017).
  • Unit 9 views on disorders that criminals are likely to display CONT'D
  • So what are the certain disorders that the criminals displayed based on the study conducted by Edward and Bond?
  • Well, 74%displayed schizophrenia; 15% displayed schizoaffective disorder; 7% displayed bipolardisorder; and 5% displayed delusional disorder (Seemungal, 2017). A personalitydisorder conducted with 26% of the sample revealed that 10% were schizoid; 10% werepsychopathic; and 6% were borderline (Seemungal, 2017). Come on lets go.
  •
  • Based on what you have explained to me lastnight, I recognize that these issues does not only exists in Jamaica but also exists in other Caribbean islands.  For one, slavery existed in many Caribbean islands and as such its link to violent behaviours is a consideration that needs to be taken by all islands. Lets go down stair
  • Wake up Andrea!
  • That’s true, I agree…. yarns
  • Mommy, poverty is another contributing factor to violence according to Hickling and Walcott (2013) that is widespread in the Caribbean mom.  A report from the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, articulates that poverty  affects Caribbean societies on a social, cultural, psychological and political level, resulting in increased crime and violence (The Borgen Project, 2016).
  •
  •
  •  If we also consider the population of prisons within the Caribbean, we would also note a significantly higher male population, similar to that of Jamaica based on Hickling and Walcott’s (2013) study. Furthermore, I recall viewing an interview with a social worker in Grenada who mentioned that many inmates attribute their violent disposition to parental neglect especially on the part of the father.
  •
  • Indeed Andrea. I am sure you are aware of how increasingly prevalent crime is becoming in islands with high poverty rates such as Grenada and St. Vincent & the Grenadines (The Borgen Project, 2016).
  • Mom ! it was great talking to you, but look at the time I’m going to be late for school .
  • Well, it is obvious that Hickling and Walcott’s study (2013) is greatly relevant to the Caribbean as a whole.
  • Okay, hurry on my dear.
