Charlie has an exceptionally low IQ and the doctors are running tests, one including a mouse named Algernon who gets the same tests preformed on him as Charlie. This is to see if Charlie could take part in an experimental surgery to raise his intelligence.
Charlie was accepted for the surgery and is waiting for them to take him to the OR. He still doesn't quite understand what is happening but he knows that it is important.
The story continues to get more exciting as so far the procedure was a success! Except now Algernon is showing serious symptoms which might also appear in Charlie later on. Because of this Charlie was kicked out of the lab and was given a private place to continue further research.
Charlie's high intelligence beings to rapidly decrease as his symptoms get worse. He is losing his memory, spelling, and grammar and refuses to go outside. Algernon died.
The author concludes the story when Charlie's intelligence begins to drop faster and faster with no sign of stopping. He decides to leave for New York so he can have a fresh start, leaving behind his friends and doctors.
