  • In the beginning, Guy Montag is a fireman and he burns books for a living. He doesn't think when he burns books, it is just instincts. He doesn't read books because they are banned from society. He thinks he is happy until Clarisse asks an important question, "Are you happy?"
  • Theme Analysis
  • Montag realizes that he is not happy and something is missing. He believes he can find it in books. Montag begins to collect books and reads them to try to find what is missing.
  • Explaining Theme
  • Books have been banned from society and the people have conformed to this lifestyle. Montag conformed to this lifestyle in the beginning of the book.
  • Montag has changed and he doesn't conform to society anymore. He developed the theme that one should resist conformity, or doing what was expected. He wasn't happy when he conformed to society. When he resisted conformity he can understand things and is happy.
  • Montag is beginning to understand and he is happy because he resisted conformity. The book has taught me not to follow social norms. It has taught me to do what makes me happy and not to be like everyone else. The theme has taught me to resist conformity to be happy
