  • The narrator begins to talk about a cat he owned when he was married. The cat's name was Pluto and he enjoyed his company.
  • Climax
  • I have to get away!
  • His sanity deteriorating due to his alcohol addiction, the narrator takes out one of Pluto's eyes with a pocket knife while intoxicated, and a few days later, hangs him by a noose on a tree branch.
  • Falling Action/Resolution
  • After the fire, staying in an apartment, the narrator wakes up to find another cat upon a hogshead. The cat looks exactly like Pluto, but instead has a large white patch of fur covering its chest. He decides to take it in as a pet when preparing to go back home.
  • Theme
  • Grr...
  • The narrator begins to grow hatred towards his new cat. One day, out of rage while working with his wife, he grabs an axe and attempts to kill the cat, but is stopped by his wife, who then suffers a chop to the brain out of his anger, killing her instantly.
  • Hiding in the body inside the wall, the narrator waits for the cat to return. The police arrive four days later. While showing them around, he rips the body from the wall, in which it stands erect with the white-chested cat on its head. The cat that led him to murder.
  • The loss of sanity can lead to terrible outcomes.
  • Yeah, 'tried to hurt a man at the local bank...
