During the Civil War, In the South, many men (of the right age and eligibility) went away to fight, leaving the women and children alone to handle things on the plantation.
Some of the Southern Women left the Home Front to become southern nurses.
Most people on the Home Front sent letters to people on the battlefield to keep in touch.
Most women had to step up to the plate and do the jobs left vacant by the men.
This caused the cotton economy to falter.
Towards the end of the war the home front could not wait for it to be over.
