"He knew his pursuer was coming; he heard the padding sound of feet on the soft earth.."
" 'Nerve, Nerve, Nerve!' " he panted, as he dashed along.
What the author means by "Your brain against mine.." is that when the General is actually hunting Rainsford, their minds and knowledge about hunting will be going against each other. And everything else they have will be going against each other.
When Rainsford was being hunted be the General, in the middle of the story, Rainsford heard the General coming and was nervous that he would see his trap he set for him. This conflict was resolved quickly because the General fell into his trap. This relates to the device because it shows that Rainsford and the General were going against each other.
What Rainsford means by this quote is that when he is being chased by the dogs, he trying to convince himself to keep fighting while they were still chasing him. This relates the device because it shows how Rainsford was trying to resolve the conflict by beating the General at his own game.
