Johny helped teach Ponyboy that there are worst lives than his. Ponyboy would always just look at Johnny's life when he thought that his was bad. Johnny was also the one that saved Ponyboy's life in the church. You could say that Johnny made Ponyboy a stronger person in the long run. For example When Johnny died Ponyboy felt terrible and didn't care about life for a while but then he got over it and became a stronger person.
Cherry helped teach Ponyboy that not all Soc's are bad in fact some are really nice. Not only Cherry herself was a perfect example but she also told Ponyboy who Bob really was. She admitted that he could sometimes be drunk and a bad person but when he wasn't he was a really nice guy. This helped Ponyboy look past the fact that someone's a Soc and just say they're a bad person. This later helped Ponyboy understand Randy who was like Cherry a Soc but then not really a Soc.
The abandoned lot is where Ponyboy opens up to Johnny. The night Darry hit Ponyboy. They just got back from the movies and they started talking about the stars. The lot is also where Ponyboy watched Dally give up on life and had the cop shoot him because he just lost Johnny. Who was the only thing Dally had because like Johnny Dally also had parents who didn't care about him. The lot is also where lots of fights happened. For example the rumble. Ponyboy would never fight until the rumble because of everything that's happened to him throughout the book.
