  • In December of 1606, 144 English men set sail from England to North America to start a new colony. They had watched Spanish explorers come back from North America rich with plenty of gold, and they were hoping to find gold on the upper east coast of North America as well. A corporation, a business owned by stockholders, called The London Company paid for their voyage, expecting to share in the gold that would be found. The men were given permission to set sail aboard three ships, and to land in the area between what is now South Carolina and New Jersey.

  • 1620 to 1691. The first settlement of the Plymouth Colony was at New Plymouth, a location previously surveyed and named by Captain John Smith. The settlement, which served as the capital of the colony, is today the modern town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. At its height, Plymouth Colony occupied most of the southeastern portion of the modern state of Massachusetts.
  • European settlements were being created throughout the New World (North and South America). One common challenge that Europeans settlers faced was how to fulfill the need for workers. Some of the first settlements tried forcing the Native Americans they met to so work for them. However, many Native Americans died from disease or ran away in the land they knew so well.
