Fortunato is the fool in the story because Montresor uses Fortunato's pride against him to lure him into the catacombs. "My dear Fortunato you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking today. But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts." Later on Montresor brings up Luchesi Fortunato's compition. "As you are engaged i'm on my way to Luchesi. If anyone a critical turn it is he." Fortunato got angry because Luchesi might be better at identifying wine.
The description makes you visualize what the catacombs look and feel like. "We came at length to the foot of the decent , and stood together upon the damp ground of the catacombs". Fortunato being sick is bad, he's about to be burried alivein the catacombs. "The niter I said; see it increases. it hangs like moss upon the vaults. We are below the rivers bed. The drops of mostier trickle among the bones. Come we will go back it is to late. Your cough." "It is nothing," he said let us go on."
Before Montresor puts the last stones in place Fortunato finally relizes that he's going to die down there and he starts screaming and yelling, and Montresor joins him screaming and yelling even louder, and he does this to show Fortunato that nobody is coming to help him. "A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the through of the chained from". "I replied to the yells of him who clamored, I reechoed, I aided, I surpassed them in volume and in strength."
