  • The British Try to Break Strike

  • Foolish black people. They really think they'll gain freedom?

  • Slaves Rebel
  • Slaves in Jamaica began a peaceful protest. The slaves were inspired by abolitionist movements in Great Britain. They protested against the oppression, and for better wages.
  • People died.
  • Rumors began to spread that the British were planning to break the strike by force.
  • Death of Samuel Sharpe
  • You disgust me!
  • The British people's rejection of the peaceful caused the slaves to full out rebel. The slaves burned and looted plantations for several days, eventually causing $1.1 million in property damage.
  • The Effects of the Baptist War
  • We're finally free!
  • By the time the British army came together and put down the revolt, hundreds of lives had already been taken. As man as 300 slaves and 14 whites had been killed.
  • Samuel Sharpe was a baptist preacher and a slave, as well as the ring leader of the rebellion. He, along with 300 more slaves, were hanged for their involvement in the uprising.
  • Die!
  • Though the uprising was unsuccessful, the effects of the Baptist War was still felt across the Atlantic. A year later, the British parliament finally abolished slavery, once and for all.
  • Equality for all!!
  • Yeah!
  • Slavery is abolished!
