Would a mad man...
The man is explaining (or trying to) why he is not crazy, but smarter than others. He says that his disease only sharpened his senses. He thinks that a mad man would not do what he did.
The man does not like the old man's "Evil Eye" so he plots to kill him. He says that the eye sends a chill down his spine whenever it looks at him. He only wants the eye, not his money.
The man visits the old man in his sleep for the next week. He shines a sliver of lantern light on the eye every night. The man does not get angry, because he cannot see the eye.
OK! I did it!
On night 8, he startles the old man. The old man waked up, opening his eye. The man gets angry, and kills the man. The man suffocates the old man under his bed, and chops off his limbs.
The police come and talk to for a while in the room the old man was killed in. The man claims to hear a heartbeat coming from under the floor. The hallucination gets worse, and he gets louder.
The man admits to the murder because he thinks he hears the heart beating. The man tells the cops to rip up the floorboards, because the old man us under. The cops never had a suspicion that he was a killer, but they arrest him anyways.
