Storyboard Text

  • In congress....
  • First of all, I wanted to thank you for having us!
  • It's our pleasure! we would be happy to answer the children's questions on our opinions of the draft.
  • Children do you have any questions?
  • who were the people who usually were drafted for selective service?
  • Yeah! What do some political leaders have to say about drafting women?
  • During the civil war, one of the first times the selective service was used, President Lincoln drafted men from the ages of 20-45 into military services for union forces. But you could pay a fee of $300 and not be drafted, which angered many people and sparked protests because they thought it was a way of protecting the rich at that time. During World War I most of the males who entered were white, single, and poorly educated who were filled with a patriotic sense. 400,000 soldiers were black and 18 percent of the soldiers were foreign-born.
  • Well actually two Republican members of the House who are military veterans, Duncan Hunter of California and Ryan Zinke of Montana, introduced legislation that would require women to register. ''I know women play an invaluable role in war,'' said Mr. Zinke. Some Republican presidential candidates, including Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, have said they favor requiring women to register with the Selective Service, while Senator Ted Cruz of Texas said that he opposed it.
  • Alright class! it's time to go back to class! I hope you're able to use the knowledge given to you today to make a stance on the selective service
