The constitutional convention was made to make a constitution for all of America. This was hard because there were many differences in what the north and what the south wanted.
The Virginia Plan had the representation in the government be based on population.
The New Jersey Plan had the representation in government be equal in every state.
The north had a manufacturing economy and wanted things that would benefit that while the south had a planation and slavery based economy and cared about what would cost them money.
The Connecticut Compromise combined the two plans together to make both the north and the south happy.
The southern states were generally more populated than the northern states so this would be more favorable in the south.
The 3/5 Compromise made it so 5 slaves equaled 3 free people when determining representation.
With this, the people in the smaller states had more representation so this was favorable to the northern states.
It created the House of Representatives based on the Virginia Plan and the Senate based off the New Jersey Plan. Every law has to go through both of these houses to be passed.
This added 12 extra congress seats in 1793 for the south.
