"Rainsford, reclining in a steamer chair, indolently puffed on his favorite brier."(18.) In the beginning of the story Rainsford was relaxed. He was laid back in his chair.
"Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring."(31.) In the middle, Rainsford was very nervous because General Zaroff was hunting him. He is ready to spring out of General Zaroff's sight.
"He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided."(34.) In the end, Rainsford defeated General Zaroff because he was trying to kill Rainsford and Rainsford doesn't believe in the murder of human with no reason. Rainsford feels proud and relaxed because of this.
