Storyboard Text

  • Symbolism - Lennie's Mice
  • Characterization - George
  • Theme- Belonging
  • The mice are a symbol that allows Steinbeck to show us just how childlike and innocent Lennie is. While he is aware the mice are dead and has been told he kills them, he has no concept of the finality od death or even what death really means.
  • Symbolism - The light
  • George is described as "small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features."(pg 2). While he could have a better life without Lennie, he chooses to stand by him. He values Lennie's companionship more than money.
  • Characterization - Crooks
  • George gives Lennie a place to belong and accepts him for who he is. While neither of them have a place where they really belong, they do have each other, and they have the dream of a place that might one day belong to them.
  • Theme - Belonging
  • Lenni sees Crooks' 'light' - he sees Crooks as a human, a life, rather than the colour of his skin. While the others might see the light and keep going, Lennie doesn't care what kind of contact he has, as long as he can talk to someone.
  • Crooks, the black stable buck, is a smart man, a man who studies the law and values what few rights he has. He is defined by the colour of his skin, a fact of which he is well aware, and has become something of a cynic. Once he lived with a loving family on a farm very much like the one that is the subject of George and Lennie's dream, but now he lives in isolation in the corner of the barn.
  • Crooks is an outsider. As far as he can tell, he'll never beong anywhere. The dream of the far gives him a moment of hope that he might find a place to belong - but he believes, with good reason, it's too good to be true, and lets that chance pass him by.
