Jonas and his family live in a perfect world. Everything is the same, there is no color, no true emotion, just sameness.
Jonas' father works as a nurturer. He brings home a baby named Gabriel who is having trouble developing correctly. Jonas' father and his sister Lily like to play with him and help him grow.
At the ceremony of the twelves, Jonas has been selected to be the new receiver. Everybody is shocked but Jonas is soon yet to realize the significance of this position.
Jonas begins his training with the current Receiver who is called The Giver. In his training, The Giver transmits memories of happiness, pain, color and everything that the world used to be to Jonas. Jonas sees what the world used to be like before his world turned perfect.
Jonas now sees everything in color and is wishing the world was back to the way it was. Meanwhile, Gabriel is growing older and still has developing problems so Jonas' father says he's going to be released. Jonas is horrified because he knows that Gabriel is going to be killed so he and the giver come up with a plan to save Gabriel.
It's bye-bye for you in the morning little guy.
Jonas has to endure through a difficult journey to Elsewhere. a place were he and Gabriel will be safe. It's a very difficult journey but he makes into a place he's seen in a memory where the people there are waiting for him and Gabriel.
