No one was allowed to sit in Odin's throne but Odin, one day the god Frey did as he looked over nine worlds from the throne he saw the giant's daughter Gerd. Frey felt as if he had been struck like a bell, slipping from the chair he returned to his chambers.
So filled with longing he could not eat, sleep, or even speak. He refused to send any sunlight, sprinkle the trees with rain, or look after the harvests. The gods grew worried and Njord Frays father sent Skirnir, Freys courageous messenger, to speak with him. Skirnir hurried to Freys chambers where the god was grieving. After hearing his plight he promises to win the maiden for him.
Frey lends him the sword that fights by itself and the horse that leaps over the flames between the worlds. His mighty horse leapt through the flames and carried Skirnir to the castle that was surrounded by a high wall guarded by a pair of fierce hounds chained to posts. After speaking to a herdsman tending goats he strode to the hounds and spoke gently trying to calm them.
Gerd called to her handmaiden who told her a rider had come, hearing this she told her to let him in and give him ale. Gerd appeared before him and he told her of his task to win her hand for the god Fray.He presented to her a gift of twelve golden apples from Frey which she turned away, he then presented her with a magic ring that could make gold that was also turned down finally he threatened to cut off her head if she did not do as he said which she smiled unafraid.
Pulling out a wand he threatened to strike her with a spell that would have her starring out at the land of the dead and her bones would become monstrous flesh and she would spend the rest of her days with the three headed giants horrified she agreed to wed Frey, Gerd's hounds were silent as Skirnir galloped away. Skirnir returned to Asgard and Frey rushed to greet him,
When his master asked him how he won her he only answered with the words "I am very persuasive." Gerd was filled with cold fury when she went to the forest nine days later the giant Ice maiden outraged she was being forced to marry fray but as soon as she laid eyes on him her heart melted and as soon as she was embraced by him, flowers blossomed in all the fields.
