Jacob's Story of Schooling
In fourth grade, I was labeled with a learning disability. Ever since, my teachers have failed to view me as they view the other students. I am seen through the lens of my disability.
When I showed up on the first day of 5th grade to my history class with Mr. Burr, I expected nothing more then a push to the side and look of concern.
He began the class unlike any teacher I had ever had before. He offered us a binder that was already set up to keep us organized. He talked about the main idea chart, which we would use as a class to pull out main ideas from the work we had read or videos we had seen!
After school, Mr. Burr came up to me to let me know that he had seen all the strengths I possess, and was looking forward to the excellent year we were going to have. I left that day feeling more motivated and confident then I ever had before!
For the rest of that year, I was treated and held to the same expectations as all the other students. Mr. Burr taught me how to critically think, organize my materials, and found ways to keep me attentive throughout the whole day.
