Character Vs. Self: Breaking Fears
Character Vs. Self: Grieving Process
The turning point in Oskar's life is when he listens to his dads phone call on 9/11. These messages are the last memory of his father and the only thing he has left. From this point on Oskar is on a quest to find where a key that his dad left unlocks.
Oskar goes to Staten island on the ferry, which at the beginning of the story he wouldn't do. He had a fear of public transport and would walk everywhere. This scene shows that he has overcome his fear, like his father would of wanted him to.
Oskar digs up his fathers grave, looking for anything to remember his dad by, but when he digs it up, its empty. He realizes that he probably wont ever find something to remember him by except the recordings.
