Symbolism: Deck of cards
George: A smaller soft spoken man who travels and takes care of his companion Lennie, who would normally be unable due to a head injury earlier in life. He does so whilst working various odd farm jobs around the state and simultaneously avoiding the trouble that Lennie seems to get into at every point they stop at.
Friendship is demonstrated right away at the beginning of the book, it is clearly mentioned how close George and Lennie are, and how George takes pride in caring for him. This is demonstrated in the dialogue during the first chapter as they camp out by the river bank
The deck of cards in chapter one symbolizes Georges frustration in a way, although he has a partener to play a more complicated games such as poker or a variant, he consistently chooses to lay out a solitaire line for himself and instead talk to Lennie as oppose to play cards with him.
