Jamestown Deaths - Samantha Mosley
At the Jamestown settlement, there were many deaths.
Why did so many people at the Jamestown settlement die?
We were attacked by the Native Americans, due to us "invading" their land, and claiming it to be ours.
We were also living somewhere that we didn't know everything about. We had very limited access to the resources, with our lack of knowledge.
So many people died in the small settlement of Jamestown.
We had very little sanitation, and our way of disposing human waste was dumping it into the river. After that, we didn't have very clean water.
The settlers made many bad decisions, including landing in the wrong place. They decided to land up the James River, which is in Native American claimed land. According to the Jamestown Interactive Game by Nation Geographic, they could've landed on a small island, but decided not to. The island was protected from Spaniards, and Native Americans.
We didn't have very many house. They land wasn't cleared, and we had to do it ourselves before we could build any houses.
The Jamestown settlers also died from a huge drought, according to Science, based on "The Lost Colony and Jamestown Droughts." The drought lasted about 10 years, causing many terrible winters, and agitation between the Natives and the Settlers.
And that my friends, is why so many people died on the Jamestown settlement.
Carville Earle claims that the settlers of Jamestown didn't have very many good ways to keep hygiene. Also, the James River wasn't always a dirty river. The settlers of Jamestown didn't have a way to dispose of their human waste, so they dumped it into the river, hoping that the waste would go away. Due to this, they didn't have clean water to drink, or cook with.
According to National Geographic, when the settlers landed in the New World, the land wasn't cleared yet. In order to build houses, the land must be cleared. The settlers had to clear the land, and then build any houses, or forts that they needed.
Many, many people died trying for the Jamestown settlement, and a possible new country.
