  • Metals used for building timekeeping structures came from the big bang predating even the creation of Earth.
  • Before any clocks or watches were invented, people only relied on sunlight to determine how long they have until dark. 
  • Ancient Egyptians used obelisks as ‘shadow clocks’ to tell time using the shadows they cast during the day. The oldest of these date to 3500B.C 
  • Some towns and cities had a centrally located clocktower which announced the start of prayer and the beginning/end of the workday. These usually consisted of a bronze bell and a striking mechanism which were the first to be powered by gears and levees.

  • At the start of the 20th century, the height of the Industrial Revolution; new technology for telling time were invented as the watch became more affordable and durable.
  • New technological advances such as advanced electronics allowed for the creation of the digital clock which is the most common clock face today.
