Primary(public school): My parents bought only uniforms for me and notebooks
Secondary(public school): Parents could not afford to pay for me. Compassion International paid for me because of outstanding performance in primary school. Won an excellence award in 2012.
Working in the camp taught me how important it is to provide opportunities to people who would not easily get them. This matches my background too!
I wrote an article about refugee education and got published in the pienews. I'll also present at Ashesi education collaborative about refugee education.
University: Parents could not pay for this either. I applied for different scholarships and got admitted at Kepler. Completed a work study and my degree in 2 years.
In Rwanda, there are so many people who cannot afford to go to University. They can however learn practical skills at a training center.
Provided a graduation speech. Now have worked in Kiziba camp for 2 years in education sector(at Kepler)
In Rwandan Universities, a graduate is not able to speak well English and use a laptop effectively
So many other programs including college summit inspired me to think about opening a training center as a social entreprise to help vulnerable people
Vulnerable people can achieve great things if given opportunities! They need us!
The training center would help people to learn English and Computer skills. They can then find paid internships to help their families and give back to the program.
