Storyboard Text

  • Pay for Continental Soldier
  • I can't believe they've been lying to all of us this whole time!
  • Massachusetts Debt
  • If you want your farm back, you shall pay!
  • August 29th in North Hampton
  • Time to close the courts in Springfield and Concord!
  • ok..
  • Let's Go! We must protest!
  • Soldiers were paid with paper certificates. Instead for money, they sold them to speculators. I disagree because the government was making promises instead doing what they said they would which was paying them.
  • Septemeber 25th-28th
  • Here's what will happen: We will surround the insurgents who are camped at Petersham.
  • If we attack, it will have to be a suprise! We can't get caught!
  • To pay off the war debt, they raised taxes and the Legislature required thay they pay in hard money. Most farmers were accustomed to long-term credits, so they borrowed money when they needed it and then repaid. If they couldn't pay, farms were taken away.
  • Shay's New Plan
  • An armed group of farmers closed the County Court, bringing all foreclosures to a halt and they shut down courts in other towns. They ended up closing the courts in Springfield and Concord to protest judges.
  • Editor of Massachusetts Centinel's Observation
  • Good thing we are no longer with the Aticles of Confederation.
  • Farmers led by Daniel Shays assaulted the arsenal. Government troops marched through a snowstorm to surprise and surround the insurgents who were camped at Petersham. The people realized they could destroy the government.
  • Shay's plan was to mount a suprise attack and overrun the new federal arsenal at Springfield. He needed a new plan because someone figured out their plan to rebel. The results to this was that the farmers scattered into the woods and in April, five men were sentenced to hang.
  • The "late insurrections in the Commonwealth...must be considered as the cause of bringing the federal government into existence..". This means they were late to rebell. I agree because if Shay didn't rebel, we would still be with the Articles of Confederation.
