George and Lennie arrive at the Salinas River where they decide to camp for the night after being put off a bus 10 miles from their destination. As they lay down to go to sleep, they talk about their dream of one day owning a farm of their own.
The main conflict of the story is Lennie's ignorance, which often gets George and him into many perilous situations that could cost them their dream of owning their own farm.
They travel on the next morning until they reach their destination, a ranch, where they start their new jobs. They have many good times on the ranch and they meet a lot of new people.
