  • Jenner decided to try a theory. he took puss from cow pox blisters which were on the hand of a milkmaid called Sarah. She milked a cow and developed blisters
  • A young boy called James Phipps would be his guinea pig. Jenner injected puss into a scratch on his arm. This was repeated over a few days with more puss everyday
  • The virus particles that caused cow pox met lots of white blood cells
  • White blood cells recognise the antigens on the cow pox virus particles as being different to the ones on all of James' blood and body cells
  • WHITE BLOOD CELL
  • ANTIGEN
  • The white blood cells made antibodies which were sent to cover the antigens on the virus particles. These antibodies destroyed the virus
  • White blood cells recognised the antigens and quickly made antibodies to destroy the virus. After a few days James made full recovery.
  • He deliberately injected Phipps with small pox virus which had similar antigens to the cow pox virus. James became ill but only for a short time
