Jenner decided to try a theory. he took puss from cow pox blisters which were on the hand of a milkmaid called Sarah. She milked a cow and developed blisters
A young boy called James Phipps would be his guinea pig. Jenner injected puss into a scratch on his arm. This was repeated over a few days with more puss everyday
The virus particles that caused cow pox met lots of white blood cells
White blood cells recognise the antigens on the cow pox virus particles as being different to the ones on all of James' blood and body cells
WHITE BLOOD CELL
The white blood cells made antibodies which were sent to cover the antigens on the virus particles. These antibodies destroyed the virus
White blood cells recognised the antigens and quickly made antibodies to destroy the virus. After a few days James made full recovery.
He deliberately injected Phipps with small pox virus which had similar antigens to the cow pox virus. James became ill but only for a short time
