Storyboard Text

  • ... After overthrowing Tarquin Superbus the Proud. They instead instantiated a republic, in which the people vote on their ruler. At the start of Rome, there were three groups of people that lived in the area. Can anyone name them?
  • They were the Latins, the Greeks, and the Etruscans.
  • After class...
  • Hey, were you paying attention in class? I kind of zoned out, can you go over the Roman Empire.
  • Yeah sure. Around 600 BC Rome was being ruled by an Etruscan king named Tarquinus Superbus, and the Romans did not like it. They overthrew himand started a new type of government called a republic, meaning the people elected their rulers. It is important to note that the Romans never wanted to have a king rule over them after Tarquinus, so later when Julius Ceaser became too powerful, Brutus lead the Senate into killing him.
  • What was the Greek republic like?
  • The citizens of Rome elected two consuls that served as chief exceutives and lead the army.  They both had veto power over eachother. Their government also included a Senate made up of particians, the upper class citizens. Lower class citizens called the plebeians were not as included in government but were able to elect officials called tribunes.
  • Tell me more about their advances in government.
  • The plebeians were unhappy with their little say in government, they revolted and eventually their Tribal Assembly was able to make laws for Rome, adn the tribunes gained veto power, this was a huge accomplishment for the plebeians who now had some power in government. Another advancement in government came when the Romans wrote down their laws they called them the 12 Tables because they were literally written down on 12 tablets.
  • What did Rome accomplish as an Empire?
  • At its peak the Roman Emplire consited of almost all the land surrounding the mediterranean. For the most part Rome allowed conquered people to live in peace, sometimes lands would become allies of Rome.
  • Did Rome encounter any issues when trying to take over other lands?
  • Yes. At the same time that Rome was growing, a city called Carthage was also getting bigger. Eventually the two cities crossed paths, and a series of war started between them, called the Punic War. The first part of this war was caused due to fiughting over Sicily, Rome won. The second punic  was lead by Hannibal to try to defeat Rome. He came through an atypical route to supprise Rome, but Carnage still lost. In the third war Rome, influenced by Cato the elder, Rome again battled Carthage, and lead by Scipio conquered Carthage and burned the city.
