In 1568 the new, big navy that Elizabeth created seized a ship that was controlled by Spain which angered Philip of Spain. Before this Spain and England had a peace treaty but now it seems like it is about to collapse.
Elizabeth also restored Protestantism and knighted Francis Drake which further angered Philip because Francis traded privately and he saw this as an insult to the free trade agreement.
The Dutch leader is assassinated. Elizabeth tells Francis to harass Spanish ships. Philip attacked back by taking all English ships in Spanish ports. A war was looming.
England allies with the Dutch states who supply ships to invade Spain. Philip plans to block the channel to allow the Duke of Palma to invade. However, Francis manages to burn a large number of Spanish ships.
The armada reaches the western side of the channel. They are spotted and the English navy launch. The English commander Lord Howard sends eight fire ships into to armada, leading to out of control ships blundering into English fire.
The Spanish firepower was no match for the waiting English. The wind changed to a strong northerly gale and smashed the Spanish ships against Scottish rocks. Examination of the cannonballs in the ocean suggest the Spanish had the wrong cannonballs.
