In the year of 1850, California is admitted into the union. One of the biggest conflicts regarding the new land was whether it was a free or slave state. Congress faced the same problem when it came to California and its position on Congress.
Also in the year of 1850, Slavery was creating a further divide between the North and the South. This event was possibly leading to DC becoming a slave free state to show no support to the Northern Free states and the slave states.
As time went on, more and more slaves escaped slave states and fled to the Free states. This angered the South. Something needed to be done, these slaves were the southern property.
You don't belong here...
Around the same time, new territories of Kansas and Nebraska were divided on whether or not the should be slave states. A compromise was needed! Maybe we should let the states choose...
We want to be a Free State!
We want to be a Slave State!
Ok Congress, We need a compromise regarding the issue in California, Nebraska/Kansas, DC, and free slaves in the free states.
According to the fugitive slave law, all slaves are to be returned to the South. All citizens must help the Southern masters catch any "free" slaves.
As a government, we have come up with resolutions regarding some the conflicts we have seen occur in the country... We present to you, the Compromise of 1850.
The compromise states that California is a free state, Kansas and Nebraska have popular sovereignty, and DC is going to be a free state to show no support to either side of the problem.
