Storyboard Text

  • In Philadelphia, 1778, delegates from each state met in order to create a central government. They signed the Articles of Confederation, allowing for a government with very limited power over state governments.
  • The hero of the American Revolution, George Washington was picked to lead the delegation. Benjamin Franklin, 81, helped to smooth over the debates.
  • William Paterson
  • William Paterson, a delegate from New Jersey, proposed that each state have equal representation as he feared the larger states would dominate the smaller ones. This was known as the New Jersey Plan.
  • I agree with the fact that a stronger national government is needed, but all states must have equal representation in the legislative branch to prevent tyranny.
  • James Madison
  • In 1786, James Madison called together a convention in Annapolis to discuss problem of the Articles of Confederation and trade regulation. However, only 5 delates showed up.
  • This convention has been called for the purpose of revising the Articles of Confederation.
  • In 1787, Alexander Hamilton called together a convention, later to be known as the Constitutional Convention. News of Shays' Rebellion convinced 55 delegates to attend.
  • Shays' Rebellion has clearly shown us that the Articles of Confederation need to be changed and a stronger national government is needed.
  • Roger Sherman
  • After much disagreement, Roger Sherman proposed the Connecticut Compromise, also known as the Great Compromise, as a mediation between interests.
  • In order to alleviate the strife between large and small states, I propose that the legislative branch be divided into two branches: the House of Representatives, represented by population, and Senate, represented equally.
