After the Civil War, the nation needed to be put back together. Lincoln created a plan called "The 10% Plan" which was very lenient to the South.
Congress was filled with Republicans, who wanted to punish the South

Black codes were passed in many places to keep AA's close to slavery as possible
Many places made it hard for AA's to get a job so some had to go back into slavery. For very little payment.
The Civil Rights Act of 1866 was passed by Congress in reaction to black codes. It said that AAs were to enjoy equal rights with the rest of U.S citizens. Northern troops invaded the South to enforce the CRA of 1866.
The Freedmen's bureau was organized to help former slaves and the Jim Crow Laws segregated the blacks from the whites. The KKK rose up to scare the AAs. In the end, the reconstruction compromised to settle the election of 1876.
The 13th Amendment ended slavery, the 14th granted citizenship to former slaves, and the 15th gave voting rights to African American men.
