  • In the South, Cotton was a huge industry, many places had plantation, a huge portion of mind dedicated to growing one kind of crop. In the United Staes, there was a total of four million slaves, most of them working in cotton fields.
  • Economy in the North
  • For people living in the North, the labor they had was mainly subsistence farming. This us when they grow crops and raise livestock for family use, instead of selling them like cash crops.
  • Labor in the South
  • African Americans were segregated and didn't have the same education system as the whites had. Blacks went to a different school then white kids. The white schools were very well built, while the black schools were not.
  • African Americans in the South
  • Lumber in the North was a very popular and successful business. Lumber in the 1800s was used for the building of ships, making tables or chairs, and making other products, like sheds or small buildings.
  • African Americans in the South were treated very poorly. Most African Americans worked in fields day after day. Some slaves worked as house servants or nannies, working inside with tasks such as sweeping, washing dishes, ironing clothes, or sometimes babysitting if you were a very trusted slave.
  • Even though slavery was banned in 1865, African Americans still faced difficulties from Whites, like poor jobs and education. The jobs whites and blacks had was very different, most of the time blacks getting minimally paid jobs and very small jobs with little pay.
