Ponyboy vs. Society
In Ponyboy's daily he is constantly facing this conflict because all of society looks down upon Greasers as hoodlums and "white trash". This conflict is definently out of Ponyboy's control because he can't control how he was brought up or how the rest of Society feels which makes it unfair for him. This conflict never resolves and gets worse. This conflict kind of hardens Ponyboy against contact with non greasers because of the harsh treatment he has received from society in his life.
The Hospital makes Ponyboy feel relieved in the start, but later it makes Ponyboy sad with the loss of his friend Johnny. This is a hard setting for Ponyboy because he has to navigate how to cope with the loss of Johnny and he has to deal with the reprecussions of Bob's murder. The only rules he has to follow in this setting are that he can't leave until he heals and after that he can leave. This setting lets Ponyboy grow by letting him deal wtih loss and figure out how to deal with situations.
Sodapop challenges Ponyboy by setting a good example by working hard to feed their family and he is so handsome it's hard to live up to his standards of appearance. Ponyboy grows from this by trying to be the kind of person like Soda and try and work hard like him. Ponyboy loves Soda and Soda helps Ponyboy by giving him support. Soda dropping out of school makes Ponyboy determined to do well in school. Ponyboy's relationship with Soda only becojmes stronger as the story continues.
