  • The Three Witches
  • "Fair is foul, and foul is fair,/ Hover through the fog and filthy air."
  • Thane of Cawdor's Betrayal and Macbeth's Promotion
  • "For brave Macbeth...Till he unseamed him [Macdonald] from the nave of th' chops..."
  • "Go, pronounce his [Thane of Cawdor's] present death,/ And with his former title great Macbeth."
  • "Norway himself, with terrible numbers, Assisted by that most disloyal traitor, The Thane of Cawdor..."
  • Macbeth and Banquo's Encounter with the Three Witches
  • "All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!...Thane of Cawdor!...that shalt be king hereafter."
  • "If you can look into seeds of time.../ Speak, then, to me, who neither beg nor fear/ Your favors nor your hate."
  • "Though shalt get kings, though thou be none. So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo!"
  • "But how of Cawdor? The Thane of Cawdor lives..."
  • The tragedy of Macbeth is introduced with three witches, who stand under thunder and lightning to discuss where to meet again. They plan on meeting Macbeth when the battle is over. The witches propose the theme of the play beforehand.
  • Macbeth's Ambition and Obstacle
  • "Our eldest, Malcolm, whom we name hereafter/ The Prince of Cumberland..."
  • As the battle between Scotland and Norway continue, a captain brings news of nobleman Macbeth's victory in killing the king Macdonald of Norway. Meanwhie, nobleman Ross informs King Duncan of Thane of Cawdor's betrayal to the Norwegian side. King Duncan plans to execute Thane of Cawdor and promote Macbeth to his position.
  • Macbeth's Letter and the King Duncan's Arrival
  • "Yet do I fear thy nature;/ It is too full o' th' milk of human kindness/ To catch the nearest way."
  • "Look like th' innocent flower, But be the serpent under't."
  • Macbeth and Banquo encounter the three witches along their trail. The witches' prophecy speak of Macbeth becoming king and Thane of Cawdor besides the position of Thane of Glamis. Wheras, the withces foresaw Banquo's children as kings.
  • Macbeth's Change of Plan
  • "We will proceed no further in this business..."
  • "Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums/ And dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you Have done this."
  • After Thane of Cawdor's execution, King Duncan promotes his son Malcolm as Prince of Cumberland. Macbeth faces an obstacle in his journey to fulfill his prophecy as king. Therefore, he ponders whether to stop in his journey and fall or surpass the Prince, primarily through violence and bloody conflict.
  • "Your Highness' part/ Is to receive our duties, and our duties/ Are to your throne and state children and servants..."
  • "The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step On which I must fall down or else overleap..."
  • Macbeth sends a letter to his wife about his encounter with the witches and the prophecy. Lady Macbeth believes his heart is too kind to kill individuals to meet his desires. King Duncan was going to visit Macbeth's home, so Lady Macbeth told her husband to hide his evil and darkness underneath his smile.
  • "I am settled and bend up.../ False face must hide what the false heart doth know."
  • Suddenly, Macbeth backs down from his plan to kill the king as the king sits in the dining room for supper. Macbeth has a conversation with her husband, insulting and criticizing his decision with harsh terminology. She creates a plan to kill the king while he is asleep while his two guards are drunk. Macbeth decides to perform the task and regain his ambition.
  • "If we should fail -"
  • "But screw your courage to the sticking place/ And we'll not fail...What cannot you and I perform upon Th' unguarded Duncan?...His spongy officers, who shall bear the guilt / Of our great quell?"
