The leaders that were most influential in the expansion the Franks were the Carolingians, Charlemagne's family. Charlemagne proved to be a great leader once he was crowned. History says he was one of the most influential leaders in European history and his foundation of success came from his military power.
Charlemagne assembled his army every year and led them into battle with an enemy and he made alliances with local rulers. This way, he expanded the Empire in size and power. He also took the land from people he had won against in war.
There were multiple occurances where Pope Leo III was in battle and he called on Charlemagne to help him since he was a reliable source and was good in warfare. The Franks defeated the Lombards, so Charlemagne was now the King of both Empires.
At one point, Charlemagne had to escort Pope Leo III back into Rome because he had been kicked out of supporters of the previous pope.
Pope Leo III showed his thanks to Charlemagne by making him Emperor of the Roman people. This title meant that he had restored glory to the Roman Empire of Europe.
Charlemagne did many amazing things in his life. He was the Emperor of Rome which was a very hard task and he was very powerful. He built a huge palace to reflect his own greatness. He also made an education system, preserved ancient writings, spread Christianity, and developed a single law code.
