Matthew Henson was born on August 8,1866. In Charles county, Maryland
Henson was the son of two free black sharecroppers
It was then left to his relatives to keep them taken care of. Until Henson ran away at age 11 and lived with someone who lived nearby
Henson's mom had died early on and his dad perished in Washington D.C
When he turned 12 he left to Washington D.C to begin his job as a cabin boy where he was mentored by Captain Child's for six whole years this is where he learned literacy and most navigation skills
When Captain child's passed away Henson returned to Washington D.C and got a job at a fur shop and worked as a store clerk. This is where he met Robert Peary who invited Henson to valet for his expeditions to the north pole
Henson's team had gone on numerous amounts of expeditions and one happened to go wrong in 1902 where six of there team died
On the teams final expedition to find the north pole Henson proved that he was a big part on his team. and they found the North pole in 1909.
In 1906 Matthew Henson married Lucy Ross They didn't have any children, but the lived happily.
Matthew Henson died in New York City March 5,1955
