The war for Independence 1810- 1821 An armed conflict between the people of Mexico and Spanish colonial authorities. It started as an idealistic peasants' rebellion against their colonial masters, but finally ended as an unlikely alliance between "liberales" (liberals), and "conservadores" (conservatives).
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla What he began as a movement for independence, became a social and economic war of the masses against the upper classes. He was caught, expelled from the priesthood, and executed by firing squad as a rebel.
Colonel Iturbide "Plan de Iguala" Became the leader of the conservative factions in the Mexican independence movement. he and Vicente Guerrero signed the Plan de Iguala and the Tratado de Córdoba, ending the war and giving Mexico independence.
struggle for independence Spain was virtually cut off from its colonies during the Peninsular War.
Congress of Chilpancingo Declared the independence of Mexico from Spain and drafted a constitution, which received final approval.
Independence celebration A Mexican congress would chose an emperor, this was to become an important point. Iturbide marched into the capital with Vicente Guerrero and Guadalupe Victoria and the army. After so many years of fighting and over 300 years of Spanish rule, Mexico was independent at last.
