In 1821 Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica and Chiapas all gained independence from Spain. They celebrate each year with massive parades and bands.
When the right to share land was banned in 1881 many strong land owners monopolised coffee plantations. Coffee was the biggest source of income being the biggest exported item.
Poorer farmers were forced off their land resulting in them going through extreme poverty. They had to work unreasonable hours for little pay.
When in 1929 the price of coffee fell, poor farmers struggled to get jobs, resulting in them starving. This sparked major protests.
The government created a range of military regimes to oppress the protesters. They beat, harassed, tortured, abducted, executed and raped many innocent people. this violence got so bad between 1979 and 1992 that it was classified as a civil war.
On the 16th January 1992 The Chapultepec Peace Agreement was signed by the combatants in Mexico City, officially ending the conflict.
