  • There are so many features in the comedy genre. Some of these are love, complexity, divergent and critical thinking and pragmatic.
  • Some sub-genres include Anarchic Comedy,Horror Comedy,Black Comedy and action comedy.
  • Here are a few plays. The Merchant of Venice. The Merchant of Venice is a comedy about money and greed. This play is set in Venice, Italy. The protagonist in this story is a man named Antonio who is a merchant. Antonia borrows money from the Jewish moneylender Shylock, which he then gives to his friend Bassanio who needs it. Antonio promises Shylock a pound of flesh if he cannot pay the money back. Three months later, Shylock wants the money back but Antonio pay. During this time, Bassanio has married a beautiful girl named Portia, who has a plan to save Antonia. Her plan is to dress up as a lawyer and help Antonia when they meet in court.
  • Taming of the Shrew A young Italian gentleman named Petruchio, loves Katherine, a beautiful but very bad-tempered young woman. He marries her and makes fun of her in order to cure her bad tempers. After many funny jokes and quarrels, Petruchio succeeds and Katherine becomes a good wife whom she loves very much.
  • A winter's tale A king called Leontes tries to convince his friend to stay at his kingdom for a while longer. He then gets jealous and tries to poison his friend. Leontes wife gave birth to a girl child and gets abandoned and was raised by a shepherd. After 16 years she meets a prince called Florizel and then soon became engaged.
  • These are a few of the characters in Shakespeare's plays Antonio- Antonio is a merchant from Venice, Italy. Antonio is a very caring friend and is always willing to help friends who are in need. Antonio is the protagonist of the story. A quote from Antonio in the play: “Well, tell me now what lady is the same, To whom you swore a secret pilgrimage, That you today promised to tell me of?” Leontes- Leontes is a king from Sicila, he has a short temper and is also aggressive. He is normally angry. Romeo - Is a member from a family that is in conflict with another family who his lover is in.
  • The main pupose of the comedy genre was to make people laugh through quirky dialogue, funny body language and an interesting scene.
  • Here are some more definitions in the comedy genre: Characters: The people who are in the story and the people that the story relates to. Eg. Hamlet Dialogue: The script and the talking parts of the story. It is a conversation between two people. Eg. When the ghost talks to the men Plot: The main events of a story presented through chronicle order and events of the story. Eg. When the King dies Conflict: The serious disagreement or the negative things that happen in the story. Eg. When the King’s brother steals his place. Setting: The background of the story and the scene of where the play is. Eg. The castle in Hamlet.
  • Stage Directions: Directions given by the director to the characters while playing. Eg. When the director instructs where the actors go and how they act.
