Della and Jim are a young, poor married couple. When Christmas rolls around, they don't have enough money to buy a gift for each other, so they sacrifice their most precious things to buy each other a gift.

  • What a pleasant walk!
  • Let's window shop. We don't need money. We can dream, after all.
  • Scene 2
  • I mustn't be late for work, Sydney. And thank you, it keeps perfect time.
  • Off to work already, Mr. Young? Also, that's quite a watch.
  • Scene 3
  • Mrs. porter, for Jim, for Christmas, I have to cut and sell my hair. I know It's hard, but that's what I'm going to do.
  • WHAT?! Why, dear, you can't possibly do that!
  • Jim and Della are walking down a street window shopping.
  • Scene 4
  • How much is my hair worth?
  • Jim is rushing off to work, and Sydney starts a conversation.
  • Scene 5
  • You cut your hair to get my present? Why Della, I sold my watch to get yours!
  • Della explains to Mrs. Porter that she will cut her hair to get more money for Jim's present.
