  • After a few weeks father decided that it was time to start school again so they arranged for a tudor named Herr Liszt to come every morning to teach Bruno and Gretel, Herr Liszt preferred to teach history and geography which upset Bruno as these were his least favourite subjects
  • After a long sit on his bed Bruno realised how much he missed exploring so he put on a large coat and big boots and set out for an adventure
  • Whilst Bruno is exploring he walks along the fence that he has stared at clueless for the past few weeks, he sees a young boy on the opposite side of the fence so Bruno decides to approach him, then realising he can't be much older than himself
  • Bruno sat down with the boy on the other side of the fence, they introduced themselves, Bruno and Shmuel, they also discovered that they had the same birthday, Bruno was proud of himself as he had officially made a new friend, both of them agreed to meet everyday at the same time, so they did, sometimes Bruno would bring chocolate or bread to share between them, he looked forward to this part of the day
  • As it was raining Bruno had to stay inside, therefore, could not see Shmuel in the afternoon, when gretel came to talk he accidentally told her about Shmuel but managed to cover it up by claiming that he was Bruno's imaginary friend, Gretel found this amusing, teasing Bruno about it
  • Due to rain Bruno and Shmuel weren't able to see each other as much as they would have liked, but when they did Bruno noticed that Shmuel was getting skinnier each time. One day to Bruno's surprise he found Shmuel in the kitchen washing glasses, Shmuel explained why he was there
