  • Robert E. Lee, a brilliant Confederate general, was trying to break the Union's will; he wanted other nations to recognize the South. He and his troops gathered West of Gettysburg. On the flip-side, Joseph Hooker, commander of the Army of the Potomac, was replaced by Union general George G. Meade.

  • ...
  • General Lee had lacked recent information on the Union due to J.E.B. Stuart slacking off. This caused him to be unaware that the Union troops were encamped closer to Gettysburg. On July 1st, 1863, a Confederate raiding party went to Gettysburg to search for boots and other supplies. They then ran into George G. Meade's Calvary, thus beginning the battle. The Confederates pushed the Union troops back through Gettysburg, which forced them to regroup at Cemetery Ridge. So the Confederates then moved East and camped at Seminary Ridge.

  • What are you doing here?!
  • It is now the second day of the battle. General Lee ordered his troops to attack the left side of the Union line. He knew that he could win if his troops captured Little Round Top; a rocky hill South of Gettysburg. His troops fought hard for the hill, and focused on attacking the South side. However, the Union forced the Confederate troops to pull back from attacking the hill. Then, the Confederates attacked Cemetery Hill as well as Culp's Hill. The attack was unsuccessful, however they managed to take a few trenches on Culp's Hill.

  • On the third day of the battle, James Longstreet was trying to convince Lee not to attack. However, Lee strongly believed that the Union was at its breaking point; he planned to attack their center line. The Confederates then shelled Cemetery Ridge with cannon fire for 1 hour. They believed they damaged the Union's artillery, but, they did little damage. They then divided into 3 groups and charged the center line. George Pickett's division had been killed due to a massive frontal assault. This was called Pickett's Charge; 1,500 men had participated in it. The Confederates then retreated when the Union barraged them.

  • CHARGE!
  • The Union had won the Battle of Gettysburg with 23,000 casualties. The Confederacy had 28,000 casualties; more than 1/3 of Lee's army. This had demoralized the South and they never launched attacks on the North again. Also, Great Britain and France refused to help the South. The Unions victory boosted their confidence that they could win the war.

  • After the battle, President Lincoln gave a speech praising the Union soldier's bravery. This was known as the Gettysburg Address. It was only 2 minutes long, but is one of the most famous speeches in U.S. history. There were over 3,500 Union soldiers in the Cemetery.
