Theme: After you make one bad choice because of an emotion, it's impossible to start making good choices, to avoid consequences, based on that emotion.
Puritan: The story relates to the puritan literary time period. Any choice against God could get you executed. The Puritans were religious people. An act that they thought was against God, would be against the community as well.
