When Realization Hits
"GAY GAY GAY RAFE GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY RAFE GAY GAY GAY" (3)
"Finally, here it was. My chance for a do over. Here at Natick, I could be just Rafe...Not the openly gay kid who had it all figured out" (2)
"No one had really been looking at me all the time. Other than me. That felt like a huge thing to realize, and I wanted to figure out how to spend the rest of my life turning that camera off, or pointing it outward so I could see other people as they were" (309)
Here, Rafe realizes that he has no idea who he is anymore besides "that openly gay boy." All he can see is how his sexuality has become his identity and he can't stand it.
Finally at his new school, Rafe decides not to tell anyone about his sexuality. He wants no one to find out that he is anything but straight. If he does that, he thinks that he can be just him. He wouldn't be defined by his sexuality anymore. He'd just be Rafe.
Rafe has finally come to terms with how his sexuality and identity can coexist. He realizes that he's been thinking about himself too much and that one's harshest critic is themselves. He decides to come out to the school and attend the Gay Straight Alliance meetings.
