  • The Old Man and the Sea
  • Presentation By: Susan Rose
  • " Now I will pay attention to my work and then I must eat the tuna so that I will not have a failure of strength" (56).
  • The theme is, pain, time and patience pay off in the long run.
  • Theme
  • Santiago’s hands represents the pain that Santiago goes through. He sits there for days on his fishing boat, trying to catch the marlin, cutting his hands up from the fishing line. " The speed of the line was cutting his hands badly but he had known this would happen and he tried to keep the cutting across the calloused parts and not let the line slip from his fingers" (83). The marlin jumped out of the water and he was speeding up, and with the marlin speeding up and the line was cutting his hands terribly which shows the pain that he goes through.
  • Santiago's Hands
  • The boat represents Santiago's patience. Santiago is going all the way out in the ocean, trying to catch this marlin, and he is sitting in his boat. " He lay against the worn wood of the bow and rested all that he could" (74). He's just with his boat and the marlin, and the boat is showing the patience he has to go through, all the way through the ocean.
  • The Boat
  • The marlin represents Santiago's time. Santiago was just sitting in the boat, waiting for something to bite when the Marlin did. The marlin is carrying him out to sea, in the middle of the ocean, wasting his time, all because Santiago wants to show he still is lucky. "' I feel good and my left hand is better and I have food for a night and day. Pull the boat, fish'" (74). This was showing that the marlin is just taking up Santiago's time.
