Macbeth and Banquo go to see the Witches. Macbeth receives a prophecy that says he will become king. Banquo receives a prophecy that his son will become king. "Fair is foul and foul is fair, hover through the fog and the filthy air" says the Witches.
Duncan names Malcolm as his successor and names him Prince of Cumberland. Macbeth sends his wife a letter describing his want to become king and all of his thoughts. Macbeth is named Thane of Cawdor, and in celebration Duncan wants to throw a party at Macbeth's Castle.
Lady Macbeth believes that her husband should kill the King in order to become king himself. She persuades him into doing so and they devise a plan. Macbeth sneaks into his chamber to kill King Duncan in his sleep.
Macbeth has slain the king's guards in order to frame them for the murder. Macduff later finds the King dead and Malcolm and Donalbain flee in fear for their lives.
There is a knocking at the door. Drunk, the porter stumbles through the castle to answer the knocking. While comically grumbling about the noise and mocking to at the person on the other side. "Who's there, i' th' name of Beelzebub"
Macbeth has a craving for power. He has previously stated that the only man in Scotland he fears, is Banquo. He takes it upon himself to hire a few murders to assassinate Banquo and his son Fleance.
