Storyboard Text

  • Daniel Shays was a soldier during the American Revolution. When he came back home after the war was over he had a lot of bills to pay. He could not pay any of these bills since the government had not paid him for his role as a soldier.

  • Shays realized that many of his fellow soldiers were in the same situation. Even though it was the government's fault for not paying them their salary, the soldiers were still expected to pay their bills or let the tax collectors take their homes.
  • Since Shays could not afford to pay the bills and neither did he want to leave his house, he gathered a few ex-soldiers who were in the same situation and rebelled. They held pitchforks and guarded all entrances and exits to their community court so that the tax collectors could not take their houses.
  • Inspired by Shays rebellion, other ex-soldiers did the same thing in their community so that they would not hav to lose their houses for not paying their bills.
  • Since at that time America did not have an army, merchants hired their own people to stop this rebellion.
  • The government finally felt that it was time to change the Articles of Confederation as it had many problems. For instance the Articles of Confederation stated that only people that wanted to pay taxes had to pay it but mostly no one wanted to and this was the reason why the government could not pay people such as Shay.
