  • There were few rivers and waterways on which to transport goods. Without large waterways, colonist found it difficult to reach piedmont.
  • People that lived in the backcountry were mostly poor. Farming back then was difficult with the rocky, hilly, and uneven land.

  • The gray land on the map behind the Middle Colonies is the backcountry.
  • ATLANTIC OCEAN
  • ENGLISH SETTLEMENTS ALONG THE ATLANTIC COAT BY 1760
  • Hi i'm Alexander MacAllister and im a Scottish immigrant and welcome to North Carolina backcountry a.k.a ¨the best poor mans country I have heard in this age."
  • McAllister told relatives that a person ¨might make it rich very fast¨ there. It was a place where people could ¨breath the air of liberty."
  • Most people who settled in the backcountry lived a rugged life. Both men and women had to survive. Their houses were often made of roughly cut logs. Many backcountry people carried rifles wherever they went and spent most of the day hunting.
  • Hey! Your taking our land, this is ours!!
  • But because of trading between the Native Americans and the colonist there was peace and it helped both groups.
