There were few rivers and waterways on which to transport goods. Without large waterways, colonist found it difficult to reach piedmont.
People that lived in the backcountry were mostly poor. Farming back then was difficult with the rocky, hilly, and uneven land.
The gray land on the map behind the Middle Colonies is the backcountry.

Most people who settled in the backcountry lived a rugged life. Both men and women had to survive. Their houses were often made of roughly cut logs. Many backcountry people carried rifles wherever they went and spent most of the day hunting.

But because of trading between the Native Americans and the colonist there was peace and it helped both groups.
