Maddy has a very rare disease that causes her to be allergic pretty much everything. She has not left her house in seventeen years and the only people she sees are her mom and her nurse, Carla. She spends most of her time reading.
One day, a family moves in next door. Maddy immediately sees a boy, whom she figures out is called Olly. For weeks she just watches him from her window, too afraid to get his attention.
After a week of looking at each other through their windows, Olly writes his email with a marker on his window. Everyday after that, his e-mails are the only thing that Maddy looks forward to. When Maddy tells Olly about her disease, he is disappointed but he understands. The closer they become though, the more Maddy wishes she could meet him in person.
After Maddy asked a multiple times, Carla finally let Olly visit because she knows how much it would mean to her. She doesn't let Maddy's mom know. Her rules are only 20 minutes together and no touching. After Olly leaves, Maddy knows her small little world has changed forever.
By the third time they had gotten to see each other in person, Carla's no thouching rule was broken. Maddy had never felt the way she had in that moment, and she knew things could not go back to the way they were before.
A few days later, Maddy's mom found out that Olly had been visiting. She fired Carla and told Maddy that she couldn't see him again. She said she was just trying to protect her, but Maddy was devastated and once again, all alone.
