Mrs. Dubose strong enough to break morphine addiction
Boo Radley not scary, actually friendly and kind
Calpurnia talks "nigger talk" to the blacks at her church
Atticus shoots Tim Johnson
Mrs. Dubose appeared to be just a cranky, sick old woman, but she had enough courage and strong-willed determination to end her morphine addiction. She has more inner strength than others realize.
"Boo" Radley was thought to be a monster in Maycomb who caused mischief at night. When he wraps a blanket around Scout when she is standing out in the cold, he proves that he is generous and is looking out for Jem and Scout.
Jem and Scout always thought their father could never complete any physical accomplishment. They also thought Maycomb County could never be violent. When Atticus shoots a mad dog in town, it shows Jem and Scout that their father can do more things than he is given credit for, and that violence can occur anywhere.
